Brigadier General Kurt L. Sonntag

Brigadier General Sonntag assumed command of Special Operations Command South on September 16, 2014.  As commander he is responsible to the commander of U.S. Southern Command for the planning, employment and command of special operations in Central and South America.


Brigadier General Sonntag is a 1986 graduate of the United States Military Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree and was commissioned in the Infantry. While in the infantry, he served as a Bradley Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader and S-3 Air while assigned to the 2nd Armored Division. More

Col John E. Poast III

Colonel John E. Poast III is the Deputy Commander of Special Operations Command South. SOCSOUTH plans and executes special operations in Latin America and the Caribbean in support of the Commander, US Southern Command.

CMDCM Geoffrey P. Steffee

Master Chief Steffee reported to Special Operations Command South in October 2012.  Prior to being selected as the SOCSOUTH Senior Enlisted Leader, he was the SOCSOUTH J3 and Navy Element Senior Enlisted Advisor.

CAPT Stephen Grzeszczak

Captain Grzeszczak is a 1986 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned as an Ensign through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.  After completion of Surface Warfare Officer School and Communications Officer's School, he reported onboard the U.S.S. Preble(DDG-46).
